Elephant Seals
When you live in a state as large as California, you can continuously find new things to check out. Last year a friend of mine told me about the elephant seals that migrate to the beaches near San Simeon. "There are thousands of them" my friend said. That was enough to peak my curiosity and I had to go see for myself.
The seals come to this beach twice a year to mate, give birth, molt (shed their skin) and rest. When I arrived I was awe struck by the sheer number of elephant seals that occupied the beach. The majority of the seals are babies who have to learn how to swim, hunt, and build up their strength so that they are not so vulnerable in the ocean.
I had come up in March of 06 and decided to go again in Jan of 07. It was just as I remembered; the sound was awful and it stank beyond belief. All that aside, it was still pretty cool to witness these wild animals in their natural environment.
